Movie at dusk The Community Foundation of Upper St. Clair will have Family Movie Night on Thursday, Sept. 2. "The Sandlot" will be shown, starting at dusk, at the Upper St. Clair Community & Recreation Center. There is no charge and families can bring a picnic and a blanket. Art in the Garden Washington County Historical Society will hold its 17th annual Art in the Garden 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept.12 at the LeMoyne House, Washington. Tours begin at 10 a.m. at the Mt. Lebanon History Center, Lebanon Avenue (across from Southminster Church). Two tours will be given. The hour-long tour will proceed from the History Center down Washington Road to Clearview Common and return. The two-hour tour continues past Alfred Street up Washington Road to Shady Drive (at Rolliers), before returning to the Center. Along the way, the history of Mt. Lebanon's central business district will be discussed, old pictures shown, and architectural details pointed out. The tour includes two buildings that have been designated Historic Landmarks by the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation. Tour goers also will visit the Municipal Building's lobby to see the decorative murals and the Art Deco features. The tour is $5 for nonmembers and $4.50 for members. New member screening The Pittsburgh Watercolor Society New Member Screening will take place at 1 p.m. Sept. 12 in Simmons Hall at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, on Fifth Avenue in Shadyside. Educational programs The Battle of Homestead Foundation, providing educational and cultural programs on labor and working-class history, will offer "At the River I Stand: Martin Luther King and the Memphis Sanitation Workers," 7:30 p.m. Sept. 30. The event will be held at the Pump House on Waterfront Drive, Munhall (across from the U.S. Steel Research Center, the historic site of the 1892 Battle of Homestead). Museum re-creation The Museum of Western Expansion will host the Bloody Dirk, a re-creation of a Colonial tavern, from 2 to 7 p.m. Sept. 18. The museum is at the Enoch Wright House, 815 Venetia Road, Peters Township. The event will feature period food, games and information about the laws and traditions of frontier taverns. Tours of the museum will be conducted from 2 to 4 p.m. The 18th Century BBQ, featuring recipes from before tomato sauce was invented, begins at 4 p.m. Butter making also will be featured. From 5 to 6 p.m. will be a pistol, knife and tomahawk demonstration. A dice tournament with the game "Ship-Captain-Crew" is at 6 p.m. for fun and prizes. Admission is $5 toward the upkeep of the Museum of Western Expansion. Children 13 and under are free, as are all Scouts in uniform. Hot dogs, chips and soda will be sold.
