Camps offer unparalleled opportunities for all kinds of learning, exploration and summer fun. Whatever your child's interests may include, there is probably a camp nearby that has what it takes to delve into that activity.

The following is a sampling of camps and programs that parents and kids may find valuable. Parents are urged to thoroughly investigate any organization, their policies, staff, history, business practices, refund and cancellation policies before enrolling a child.

Big Ben's camp

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has announced plans to host the inaugural Old Spice Ben Roethlisberger Football Camp presented by Highmark and Fifth Third Bank this summer at Mars Area High School.

Camp will be held June 23 - 25, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Mars Area High School, with event proceeds benefiting the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation. The camp will emphasize basic fundamentals of football and will be open to all football players ages 7 to 14.

Additionally, Big Ben has teamed up with local partners Highmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Fifth Third Bank to provide camp scholarships for members of the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh to attend at no cost.

The Camper package includes nine hours of football instruction, a Nike camp t-shirt, opportunity to train with the top prep coaches in the area, an autographed camp team photo with Ben Roethlisberger and an pportunity to win daily prizes.

At Kindercare in Peters Township, summer camps are offered June 11th through Aug. 22. Junior campers, who are younger than 4 years old, can enjoy a petting zoo, exciting special visitors and enrichment activities with music and the alphabet. Children who are older than 4, can enjoy field trips, fitness and reading programs and special days filled with a variety of activities. The theme for camps this year will be Gold Medal Olympics.

The Lois Johnson Learning and Childcare Center accepts children of all ages throughout the year. Their summer camp is focused on children between the ages of 6 and 12. The Thomas Studio of Performing Arts will offer dance camps for preschool, kindergarten and elementary students in June, July and August to co-ordinate with vacation schedules to make progress in their dance education or try a new genre. ATA Taekwondo

Children between the ages of 6 and 12 can learn all about Taekwondo, a martial art, between July 21 and 25 at the ATA Martial Arts Academy. At camp, kids can break boards, learn about weapons, make crafts, play sports, games and more. No experience is necessary. The Center for Theatre Arts will be offering Summer at the Center 2008 camp, which has something for every child interested in the performing arts, who is between the ages of 4 and 18. Camp offerings include Broadway Junior for children between the ages of 4 and 7, Musical Theatre Workshop and Performance Workshop for ages 8 and up, Middle School and High School Acting for ages 12 to 18, Summer Dance for ages 8 and up, High School Musical Theatre - "Madness," for students in grades 8 through 12, an Evening Program for Jazz and Voice, a Voice and Jazz Package and a session for students in grades 6 and up in Rehearsal and Performance. The YMCA South Hills / Cloverleaf offers several camps. Camp A.I.M. is for children who face physical, mental, emotional or social challenges and is held at Carlynton High School in Rosslyn Farms. Camp runs from June 23 through Aug. 1. During the six-week program, campers can enjoy a variety of activities including aquatics, physical education, music, life skills activities and more. Camp Southwinds is open to children between the ages of 6 and 12 and is held at Silent Brook Barn in South Park from June 16 through Aug. 22. This is a traditional day camp, with many summer activities, and is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Camp Sunshine is held at the South Hills YMCA for children between the ages of 3 and 5, between May 27 and Aug. 15. All campers must be toilet trained and can enjoy lots of summer fun between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Camp Cloverleaf at the Cloverleaf YMCA in Pleasant Hills offers children between the ages of 4 and 12 plenty of traditional camp and summer fun. Camp opens June 16 and runs through Aug. 22. Camp hours are 9 a.m. through 4 p.m. with extended day care available for a fee.

Pittsburgh CLO Academy summer performance camps give kids between the ages of 6 and 18 the chance to learn and perform while working with a director, musical director and choreographer. Participants are also able create their own musical theatre experience. Offerings include CLO Broadway Camp, Peter Pan, Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Bye Bye Birdie and the Creative Discovery Camp for Children With Autism. Camps run from June 9 through Aug. 8 and vary by date and age group. The Pittsburgh Music Academy offers instruction in violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar, piano, flute and clarinet. This summer the school will be offering Music Day Camp, from June 16 through June 20 for young musicians between the ages of 6 and 12, who already play an instrument. A String Intensive Camp will be offered July 21 through July 25 for middle and high school students, a Scale Certificate Class, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. June 30, July 28 and Aug. 18 and Pre-Twinkle Class for children between the ages of 4 and 8 as well as 3-year-olds, who have some school or day-care experience, will also be available. Pre-Twinkle Class will be held on May 17 from 2to 4:30 p.m. A parent must accompany children at Pre-Twinkle Class.
