Letters touch those serving our country

We recently published a full page of addresses of some local military personnel. Readers were encouraged to send a holiday greeting to anyone on the list to help brighten their spirits while serving away from away.

This message of support was received loud and clear from a Bethel Park man serving in Afghanistan. He returned the favor by writing to thank all of you - most of whom are strangers - for sending him a greeting.

"I never expected this many people I never met to reach out the way that they did...," he wrote." I would not be the same man I am today if I did not make this choice (to join the military)."

We extend our appreciation, as well, to those who took the time to send a package, card, note or letter to those serving overseas in the military this holiday. Agree or disagree as to the reason why they're there, remember that these men and women are fulfilling a job many were compelled to undertake. They understand the risks involved and some are giving their lives to accomplish that task.

It is difficult to be away from families and loved ones, especially at this time of year. It's nice to realize what a small piece of home means.
