On-time school start irks C-M parents

By Dawn Goodman Observer-Reporter dgoodman@observer-reporter.com

Some parents are frustrated and upset that Canon-McMillan School District did not have a two-hour delay because of the snowy weather Jan. 28 when most surrounding districts did.

North Strabane mother Cindy Dick said her daughter's bus became stuck on Linden Creek Road on a hill near a curve. She said all she could think of was what would happen if a vehicle came around the curve, not knowing the bus was there.

"To me, it's scary," she said.

Dick was shocked that Canon-McMillan didn't postpone the start of the school day when surrounding districts did. Canon-McMillan and California were the only two districts in Washington County that did not delay classes.

"If they would have delayed, by 8:30, the sun was out," she said.

She kept in touch with her daughter by texting, who told her that salt truck drivers and a truck with a plow helped get the bus out. North Strabane police said they were not called.

Laura Helmick, also a North Strabane resident, said her daughter also notified her of the bus problem and asked her to come and get her. However, Helmick didn't because she didn't think she could get to her daughter if the buses couldn't get through.

Helmick said she was glad to get a text from her daughter that the bus was finally at the high school.

"It's frustrating for a parent, not knowing what to do," she said.

She said parents don't like to see delays but the district also has to err on the side of caution.

Cecil Township police Lt. Shawn Bukovinsky said a vehicle rear-ended another Canon-McMillan school bus at the intersection of Muse-Bishop Road and Route 980 Thursday morning. The driver of the vehicle said he couldn't stop because of the snow-covered roads. No one was injured and both vehicles were able to drive away.

The district transportation department referred questions to the administration.

Superintendent Helen McCracken was out of the office and could not be reached for comment. However, the district did follow its weather and delay procedures before a decision was made.
