Student-created mural shows off school pride
The students in Kara Coen's eighth period art class at Independence Middle School in the Bethel Park School District have been busy this school year. That's because they spent the last nine weeks designing and painting a mural in the school's cafeteria.
The students began the process by brainstorming what the mural should look like. Once all were in agreement, they drew their design on paper to scale, transferred it to the wall and began painting.
The mural features four trees. Each represents a season of the year-spring, summer, winter and fall. Painted below each tree is the type of shoe students would wear during that son. Each pair points toward the summer tree signifying the end of the school year.
Surrounding the summer tree are raccoons, bees and birds. A rain shower, rabbit, butterfly and flowers accompany the spring tree. In the middle of the mural, the Bethel Park black hawk sits on a rock, symbolizing the students' school pride. To the right of the hawk snowflakes fall on a deer and snowman sitting beneath the winter tree. Finally, the fall tree features falling leaves and the animals of the season.
Below, the trees' roots form the word "Independence," followed by the school's motto: "Believe in yourself every step of the way."
