Matt White of McMurray made a verbal commitment to play college hockey at the University of Vermont. While the decision does not become official until he signs formally in April, the Peters Township High School senior could decide to play at the Junior A level.

The 6-2, 195-pound forward has previously played for two seasons with the United States Hockey League's Des Moines Buccaneers, a Junior A level hockey team located in Urbandale, Iowa. The USHL, governed by USA Hockey, is the only Tier I Junior league in America.

White was also a member of Team USA in the 2008 World Junior A Challenge. Team USA claimed the gold medal after a 7-1 victory over Canada West.

"I know wherever Matt ends up next season, he will do well. He has proven to be an extremely talented, poised and hardworking player," said Dave Kosick, who coaches White's AAU 18U hockey team.

"Matt White is certainly one of the best hockey players I have seen come out of western Pennsylvania in my 35+ years of involvement with the local hockey scene."

Under Kosick, White plays for the Pittsburgh Viper Stars in the North Hills Amateur Hockey Association. Western Pennsylvania's premier amateur ice hockey organization provides top instruction for all skill levels and is devoted to promoting the growth of amateur ice hockey on a local and national level. NHAHA belongs to the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League, Great Lakes Hockey League and USA Hockey and offers competition at the Tier I & Tier II (AAA, AA, A and B) levels, as well as in-house program and the USA Hockey Initiation Program (for beginner hockey players).

So far this winter, White has appeared in 26 games for the Viper Stars, posting 47 points (21 goals and 26 assists).

"Playing with the Viper Stars has taught me a lot about working hard and staying focused... not only in hockey, but also in life as well," said White, "I have really enjoyed playing this season, and I've learned a lot from the coaching staff."

Locally teams in the PIHL are learning even more about White as he has returned to scholastic hockey, playing for Peters Township. He has helped the Indians to the top of the standings in Section 1 of the Southwest AA Conference with an 11-2-3 slate. Additionally, he leads the league in scoring with 23 goals and 19 assists for 42 points.

White could help Vermont retain its lofty Division I status in the Hockey East Conference. The Catamounts attained their highest-ever final ranking in 2008-09, finishing No. 3 in the USCHO.com/CBS College Sports Poll with a 22-12-5 overall record. They also advanced to the NCAA's Frozen Four.
