Pay It Forward lets everyone share benefits

If I won a million bucks, I'd....

Who hasn't dreamed of hitting it big in the lottery - even if you don't play?

We all think about what we'd do with that money, contemplating if we'd quit our jobs or not, pay off our house, go on exotic vacations. It's a fantasy which only a very small few actually realize.

We're giving you the opportunity to win that lottery - but maybe not in the way you may have dreamed.

The Pay It Forward campaign will reward the person who comes up with the most creative way to benefit someone else with the $5,000 award. A panel of six judges will pick the winner from all the entries received by April 28.

Unlike winning the lottery, this is a very unselfish contest. It means the winner will benefit only through his or her good deed and thought for another.

It, actually, rewards not the person who submits the best idea but the person or persons who will benefit from that act of kindness.

From an early age, we teach our children the importance of sharing. We outline the concept of all the old adages: it's better to give than receive, treat others as you would have them treat you and more. As adults, we tend to forget those ideals, instead adopting a colder philosophy toward each other.

Think of ways someone has paid it forward for you. Maybe you were digging in your purse or pant pocket for correct change and a stranger behind you in line offered the difference. Maybe a neighbor cut your grass while you were on vacation. Maybe you were having a bad day and your young child offered you a smile and a dandelion they had picked from the yard. Something even as simple as that has such a huge impact on our lives.

It's sad to think that doing something good for someone makes such big news these days. We see it all the time on television and read about it in the newspapers. It is such a big event because it's such a refreshing change to the war or the presidential election or any of the other "bad" news that's presented day after day and night after night.

Fifty years ago last week the public got its first look at a curious symbol which stood for peace. This small circular graphic has withstood the test of time to become a recognized icon throughout the world, especially through some turbulent times. The peace symbol is a simple sign that has so much meaning.

Just as the man who invented the peace symbol, you may never realize the impact something you do may have on another. This Pay It Forward campaign allows everyone to experience that feeling of benevolence. Let us know how you're contributing.
