Wrestling resurgence continues at ML

Kellan Stout is just another success story in Mt. Lebanon's attempt to regain the glory that was once Blue Devil wrestling.

The 12-year-old son of Jennifer and Bryan Stout became the first Mt. Lebanon Youth Association wrestler to place at the Pennsylvania State Youth Wrestling Association's Open Championship Tournament since the organization was formed in 2001.

According to Mt. Lebanon High School coach Bill Lewis, youth wrestling prior to that fell under the recreation department.

The last wrestler from Mt. Lebanon to place at the Junior Olympic state championships was Sam Brownlee in 2005. Although he never wrestled for the youth association, Brownlee, now a senior at Canon-McMillan, was a five-time state champion. The only other state champion from Lebo that Lewis could pinpoint was Tim Miller back in 1968.

After placing second at the Area 7 finals, Stout finished fifth in the 105-pound weight class in the 11-12 age bracket at the state finals held at the Erie Civic Center. Though he lost his first match in overtime, 5-3, Stout roared back. The Mellon Middle School student won five of his six remaining bouts to not only a medal but to gain All-State status.

Additionally, Stout qualified for the National Open Championships to be held April 19 in Battle Creek, Michigan.

"Kellan is a great kid and we are all proud of him," said Lewis.

The Stout name can't help but continue to bring recognition to Mt. Lebanon wrestling. Stout, who has been competing for four years, has two younger brothers, Luke, 7, and Mac, 5. Both wrestle in the youth program.

Plus, his father runs the Iron Horse Wrestling Academy in the community and is an assistant coach at the University of Pittsburgh. In his competitive days, Mr. Stout was a New Jersey state champion and Clarion University's only four-time NCAA All-American in wrestling.

PT duo place

Ty Buckiso and Devan Evanovich, both of Peters Township, placed at Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling Championships held in Erie.

Wrestling in the 12-and-under, 90-pound weight class, Buckiso finished sixth. Evanovich secured seventh place in the 82-pound, 14-and-under division.

Buckiso is a seventh-grade student at Peters Township Middle School while Evanovich is an eighth grader.

Other PT wrestlers that qualified for the state tournament included: Mike Buckiso, John Ivanshenko, Adam Jaworski, Michael McAleavey, Will Lusk, Phil Mary and Bryce Wilkes.
