Conservancy gets green space
By Terry Kish For The Almanac writer@thealmanac.net
Scott Conservancy Treasurer Jane Sorcan recently told the Scott Commissioners that the conservancy has acquired the 20 acres of green space adjacent to the Kane Woods and extending up the valley and ending at Meadowlark Park.
The new land, located behind homes on Meadowlark Drive and Cardinal Drive in Scott Township, brings the total property owned by the conservancy to 77 acres.
Sorcan said the conservancy plans to leave the property as passive green space, providing habitat for a variety of animals and plants. It will be open to the community for people to appreciate nature, but the conservancy does not maintain any trails on the property.
The acquisition of the land has been a goal of the conservancy for several years, and a number of people and entities worked together to bring that goal to reality. The land was donated by NVR, the corporate name of Ryan Homes, and Ed Ryan. Baptist Homes at Providence Point helped locate and communicate with the property owners. Scott Township, Chartiers Valley School District, and Allegheny County provided support for the acquisition, and attorney David Hvizdos donated a large amount of his time to the project.
Sorcan acknowledged The Pittsburgh Foundation for allowing them to redirect grant money initially received several years ago for the purchase property on Kane Boulevard to this project. The Pittsburgh Foundation funds were provided from the Peaceable Kingdom Fund and donated by Mellon Bank, N.A.
