Book club

Countryside Book Club will meet Tuesday, May 6 at the home of Suzanne Fagan. Nancy Stuckeman will review "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini.

Bike safety

Washington County Parks and Recreation and the sheriff's department will offer tips on bike safety and current helmet laws to preschoolers on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 6 and 7. Riders with an adult can bike hike on Mingo's biking trail.

Evening hike

Washington County Parks and Recreation will sponsor a Pets and Pedometer Hike at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, May 6, 13, 20 and 27 at Shelter 1, Mingo Creek Park. A veterinarian will share tips on keeping dogs fit and active. Pedometers and a record log will be provided.

Race for the Cure

The annual Susan G. Komen Pittsburgh Race for the Cure will be held Mother's Day May 11 beginning in Schenley Park.

Survivor parade begins at 7:50 a.m., 5K Run begins at 8:35 a.m. and 5K Walk and 1 mile fun walk starts at 8:45 a.m.

A pre-race Pasta Power kick-off is set at the Spaghetti Warehouse in the Strip District on May 9 and 10. Call 412-261-6511 to register.

Baked by the Spaghetti Warehouse and weighing 9,850 pounds, the world's largest lasagna will feed 22,000 people on May 11.

Rockshelter opens

The Meadowcroft Rockshelter in Avella has planned a grand reopening Thursday, May 8. Tours will provide visitors experiences to explore the oldest and deepest part of this National Historic Landmark.

Campaign for pets

PETCO stores nationwide will collect donations on behalf of local animal shelters and rescue groups through May 4.

The PETCO Foundation will donate $1 for each purchase of Pedigree products totaling $10 or more.

Dog show world

The Path to the Dog Show World will be presented by Debbie Miller-Gurchak at 7:45 p.m. starting Thursday, May 8 in Peters Township. Learn about standards, movement, grooming and handling in the ring.

Agency for Jewish Learning will sponsor Israeli-Style Ulpan for Hebrew learners of all levels. Classes will be held at 6 p.m. May 12, 13 and 15, at 10 a.m. May 18 and 6 p.m. May 19 and 20 at the Beechwood Blvd. campus. The program will include 19 hours of instruction, daily kosher refreshments and an Israeli lunch on Sunday.
