Scott Township moves ahead on municipal project

Scott Township commissioners have decided to move forward with plans for an addition to the municipal building.
The project, which is included in the township's 2009 budget, calls for an addition for the police department with a series of doors so prisoners can be transferred securely. It also includes a new commissioners' meeting room and an addition to the township library.
The 6-2 vote awarding contracts for the project took place at the commissioners' April 28 regular meeting. General contracting was awarded to CBF Contracting for $164,405, Houston Electric was named electrical contractor for $22,700, Advanced Plumbing was named plumbing contractor for $21,282, and the mechanical contract was awarded to Advance Mechanical for $20,800, bringing the total to $229,187. The township budgeted $223,000 for the project.
Commissioner Jean O'Toole, who voted against building the addition, said that while the bids were $6,000 over budget, she said with change orders the project will most likely end up more than $6000 over budget.
"This is not the time to be doing this," she said.
Township manager Denise Fitzgerald said she expects the ground to be broken for the addition the second or third week of May.
At the same meeting, the board voted 8-0 to grant preliminary and final approval to Senterra Building and Development, Inc. for the development of double homes to be located on Green Commons Drive, subject to the applicant addressing the engineer's comments in his March 31, 2009 letter, the removal of units 29CC, 30DD, and 31EE located on Vanadium Road, the development of a mutually satisfactory developer's agreement, and the recording of an easement acceptable to the township.
In other business, the board:
n authorized the purchase of two plaques to be affixed to Veteran's Bridge in memory of former Scott Commissioner and Scott Township tax collector Don Diebold, who died earlier this year.
n appointed Kathy Barlow to the Library Board of Directors.
n accepted the resignation Robert Phillips from the planning commission, appointing William Quinn to compete his term, which expires March 25, 2012.
