Mine drainage topic of meeting

Roy Kraynyk

To the editor:

I am writing to request a correction of your April 30 page A3 article headlined "Mine subsidence plan is reviewed in USC".

Despite your headline, at no time during the April 28th Upper St. Clair board of commissioners meeting did anyone from Allegheny Land Trust or the community raise the issue of mine subsidence.

Mine subsidence is the collapse of deep coal mine corridors affecting surface terrain. This is a serious problem but completely independent from abandoned mine drainage (AMD).

The subject of the commissioners meeting was the remediation of severe Chartiers Creek water pollution stemming from the deep mine outflow from abandoned mine drainage upon the Wingfield Pines property owned by Allegheny Land Trust.

I am concerned that your headline may raise false alarm about mine subsidence amongst USC residents.
