Friends' shared dream turns into a real treasure
By PJ Rittiger For The Almanac writer@thealmanac.net

Lynne Holland and Linda Nath opened Treasures in Thyme almost six months ago in West Mifflin yet they are rapidly becoming a source for shoppers who are looking for something special as well as a showcase for many local artists who want to sell their work.

The women met when they were in junior high and have now realized their mutual dream of opening a store together.

"We have consignment for several local artists, including people who carve, paint and sew. I refinish furniture. We have antiques and pieces for gardens. We also have a coffee and dessert bar and we do shopping parties. People come in and have coffee and desserts and hang out with their friends and shop at our parties. We have also started doing some interior design with their homes," Holland explained.

The interior design aspect of the business came about because shoppers started asking if the owners might help them to redecorate.

Perhaps that is because Holland and Nath have opened Treasures in Thyme in a home, which they bought and spent six months remodeling. The result is a store that is homey and comfortable, but is unlike many others.

"We have people who do bring us furniture and other things that they want us to sell for them. We have purchased items outright, but it really depends on the piece. Most of the time when people bring us things, we take it on consignment and then we pay them following a sale," said Holland. "We have antiques, many hand made things and that's really our focus. We like things that are unique but not contemporary. We also have maybe 15 to 20 people who make things that bring us their items."

Holland said that the store carries pieces by Alex Lobus, who builds small houses out of parts of old houses; Steve Pavlick, who creates whimsical carvings from bark and wood; and Diana Dominick, who sews and creates linens and fabric pieces.

Treasures in Thyme will be having an open house between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. May 17. Light refreshments will be available.
