Track stars on the quest for gold



By virtue of their first-place performances at the Southern Qualifier Meet held at West Mifflin Stadium, Elizabeth Kline, Kayleigh Birks, Samantha Carl, Kayla Keddal, Julio Merz, Evan Schardt, Matt Gregory and Julian Valdiserri rank among the area favorites to challenge for gold medals during this week's WPIAL track and field finals.

The district championships will be held Thursday, May 13 at Baldwin Stadium. Top finishers and those meeting the qualifying standards advance to the PIAA championships set for May 22-23 at Shippensburg University.

An Upper St. Clair senior, Kline coasted to victory in her premier events--the 100- and 300-meter hurdlers. Joining Kline in the 300 will be Brittany Hoffman from Peters Township and Julie Kolodziej from Bethel Park. They followed Kline's winning effort, finishing in second and third places respectively. Chelsey Shepos from Chartiers Valley supplied sixth-place showings in both races.

Birks from Mt. Lebanon coasted to victory in the 200-meter race. Steph Nitschmann from PT and Corrine Fierro, also from Lebo, qualified in third and sixth place.

Also a Blue Devil, Carl won the 1600 while her teammate Shannon Moorhead followed in fourth place. Krissy King from USC and Katie Nerone from PT added fourth and seventh places.



Kayla Keddal, who was third in the mile, dominated the 3200-meter race. The PT junior covered the eight-lap event in 11:26.59. BP's Hillary Boxheimer followed in second place and Keddal's teammate Kenzie Stepanik qualified in seventh place. CM's Erica Regoli earned the eighth spot and final berth in the championships.

Julio Merz of Mt. Lebanon won the 200-meter dash in 23.10 followed by Mitchell Fawcett from Upper St. Clair (third), Lyle Marsh from Bethel Park (fourth) and Hunter Harrison (fifth) of Peters Township. Marsh finished fourth in the 100-meter dash with a 11.56.

The top area finisher in the 400 race was Evan Schardt. The Lebo junior won the event in 50.51. Fawcett (sixth) and Kenyadda Brown (eighth) from Canon-McMillan also gained berths in that race.

Gregory dominated the 3200 race. The WPIAL cross country champion won with a 9:42.23 time. Lebo's Sean Staltari followed in second place while CM's Travis Angotti and Lebo's Alexander Moran gained the final spots for the championships.

In the fast heat paced by Hobart, Gregory, Lebo's Rad Gunzenhauser, USC's Phil Yeung and CV's Ryan Steinbock filled in spots 3 through 6 for the 1600 race. Daniel Butler from Lebo earned the eighth position.

Valdiserri dominated the 110-meter high hurdle race, finishing first in 15.55. The Mt. Lebanon senior added fourth place in the 300-meter race.

Scott Ramey from BP finished fifth in the 110-meter event. Ramey tied with six others for first place with a high jump of 5 feet, 10 inches.

Quintin Krivacek from PT followed in seventh place for the high jump. He also qualified in the pole vault as did his teammate Tad Piscatelli.

In the long and triple jumps respectively, Travis Mitro from Keystone Oaks finished second and third.

Phil Venanzi from PT, Christian Schultz from Lebo and Victor Maldonado scored fifth, sixth and seventh in the shot put. Schultz took second to CM's Kurt Bonnet in the discus while USC's Mark Ripper qualified in the eighth position. Bonnet took third in the javelin, which was won by Chas McCauley from PT. Ryan Eaton (fifth) and Karon Adams (eighth) also gained berth in the championships for the javelin.

After the 1-2 showing of Baldwin's T.J. Hobart and Dennis Logan, Christian Brandstetter from Peters Township took third in the 800. Canon-Mac's Nick Gibson and Justin Angotti placed back-to-back in fifth and sixth positions while Connor McLaughlin locked up the eighth and final qualifying slot.

Top finishers in the 100-meter dash for girls included: Ana Carnegie from BP, second; Alexandra Wright from BP, fifth; Misako Envela of Lebo, sixth and Paige Becker from USC, seventh.

After Tiara Williams of Trinity won the race, USC and CM traded spots in the 400 dash. Emily Coughlin and Nina Camacho scored second and fourth places while Jamie Pozonsky and Sara Tershel took third and fifth. Angie Hartz from CV finished seventh.

Among the qualifiers in the 800 race were: Danielle Schmulevich of Lebo, second; Maria Touloumes and Hannah Statemos from BP, third and fourth; Marisa McKnight of PT, sixth; and Rebecca Miller from Canon-McMillan, seventh.

BP's Laurel Miller finished fifth in the high jump while Brittany Rodgers from Mt. Lebanon tied for first in the pole vault.

CV's Jacquay Hawkins (third), Lebo's Anna Simone (fifth), PT's Kayla Howard (seventh) and BP's Ana Carnegie (eighth) gained spots in the long jump. Hawkins scored second in the triple jump while Howard was eighth. Lebo's Rebecca Ward qualified in the triple jump, too. She scored sixth place.

Qualifiers in the shot put included: BP's Margaux Krahe (second); CM's Chelsea Zahn (third); USC's Emily Mueller (fifth) and Lebo's Angele Hagy (sixth).

Zahn, Mueller and Hagy finished 1-2-3 in the discus. Rachel Brodland secured sixth place.

PT's Jessica Parham and Kaitlin Brace qualified in the javelin, placing fourth and eighth respectively.
