Mt. Lebanon Board of School Directors appointed Timothy Steinhauer as the new superintendent in a unanimous 9-0 vote.

Steinhauer, who currently serves as assistant superintendent of secondary education for the North Allegheny School District, has been hired for a four-year term. He will start work in Mt. Lebanon July 1.

"Dr. Steinhauer brings to Mt. Lebanon strong academic and administrative credentials from outstanding school districts in our region," said Board President Alan Silhol at the special meeting June 1. "The board is confident that under his leadership the district will continue to thrive."

Steinhauer will replace current Superintendent John Allison, who is moving to Kansas to become the superintendent of the Wichita Public School District so that he can be closer to his family.

Steinhauer said he is "pleased and honored" to have been selected.

"I look forward to the challenge of leading one of the finest school districts in the country through the next phase of growth," he said.

Steinhauer previously worked in the Upper St. Clair School District, serving as principal and assistant principal of the high school and principal of Fort Couch Middle School.

In response to a question from resident David Huston regarding the length of Steinhauer's contract, Silhol said the board decided to elect Steinhauer for four years, rather than three, in order to create stability in the district.

Steinhauer will be Mt. Lebanon's fourth superintendent since Glenn Smartschan's retirement in 2003.

Resident Scott Hagy congratulated the board members on their decision.

"One of the things that I am really excited about is the superintendent that you've chosen," Hagy said. "I'm excited for him to meet the parents and the students and the other community members because I think he is a perfect choice and I congratulate you on that."

Steinhauer's salary will be released when the contract is signed, but director James Fraasch said he is expected to be paid on the order of what Allison was paid.

Allison's salary was $146,000 per year.
