Basketball coaching clinic attracts top minds
Although he has over 250 victories in his 14-year scholastic coaching career at Upper St. Clair, Dan Holzer admits he still has a lot to learn. And, he's excited about an upcoming opportunity he will have to increase his knowledge.
For from Friday, June 5 through Sunday, June 7, Holzer's high school will host the Nike Championship Basketball Clinic.
The clinic is open to all coaches, from the scholastic to the recreational skipper, both boys' and girls' managers.
University of Kentucky new head coach John Calipari, a Moon Township native, headlines an all-star list of college coaches who will instruct at the clinic. He will discuss and demonstrate the dribble-drive motion offense.
"I think a lot of coaches are looking forward to that because a lot of programs are going to it," said Holzer. "We don't run it but I want to know how to defend against it."
So hosting the clinic gives USC an opportunity to showcase its program although no high school players will conduct drills. Those will be handled by Jeff Young and his men from Walsh University.
"We are extremely excited about this clinic. Sure it's an opportunity for people to see our program but it is going to be a thrill for all the local coaches to be with and to learn from these types of ranked coaches. For a coach, it doesn't get any better than this."
Because his former boss, Duquesne University, had a shoe contract with Nike, Holzer befriended Ed Janka. He is the director of the clinic.
The clinic will also feature Bob McKillop from Davidson, Thad Matta from Ohio State, Paul Hewitt from Georgia Tech, Herb Sendek from Arizona State, Keno Davis from Providence, Gary Waters from Cleveland State, John Groce from Ohio University and Brian Gregory from Dayton as well as Duke's women's coach Joanne McCallie.
"Each coach will speak on a variety of topics and different style of play. All parts of basketball will be covered. So I want to be front and center. Anybody who wants to become a better coach is going to want to come to this," said Holzer.
Registration for the clinic is being processed on line at www.BasketballCoach.com.
