Bridgeville gets grant for library

Bridgeville has received a state grant that will allow the borough to start work on a new library as soon as September, Bridgeville council member Mary Weise said.
The new library will be around 7,500 square feet, compared to the current library's 1,800 square footage, Weise said.
The $500,000 Keystone Grant gives the borough enough money to get started, but is only a fraction of the $2.5 million needed to build the library.
The Keystone Recreation, Park and Conservation Funds Grant Program, for public library facilities, awards matching grants to municipalities to improve the physical facilities of state-aided public libraries. The grants help local libraries update and/or expand their services.
The borough is relying on foundation grants and donations from residents to fund the addition $2 million needed, Weise said.
"Every dollar will help," he said.
Although the current library, located on Station Street, is a converted railroad station and is both historic and unusual, it has very limited space.
"[For] children's activities, we can accommodate six to eight children sitting on the floor," Weise said.
"We have to get on the floor to do those programs," Petrocelli said. "And somebody comes to use the computer after walking on top of the children."
The new library will have room to have programs for children, teenagers, adults and senior citizens, he said.
"How can we have this in 1,800 square feet? We can't," Petrocelli said. There are many programs that we could do if we had more room."
Petrocelli said he hopes that the new library will have 20 computers, compared to three at the current library. He also said there will be a family restroom and the new library will be more handicap accessible.
"We're going to have a lot more books, a lot more programs," Petrocelli said.
Weise said at the new library, there will also be room for the children to play outside.
Additionally, Petrocelli said the new library will be at a more convenient location, near the Washington Commons assisted living facility. The library will be built on the land that used to hold the old Bridgeville high school stadium, he said.
"It's at the heart of the town and it's in walking distance," he said, particularly for the nearby senior citizens at the Washington Commons.
Work will begin on the new library in September. Meanwhile, fundraising will be done to work towards reaching the $2.5 million mark, Weise said.
