Ten years ago, Silvi Labovitz was inspired to write a musical by an event that took place more than 4,000 miles from her home in Switzerland.
"They Said Yes," a contemporary musical based on the Columbine tragedy, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 26 at the Community Center in Bethel Park.
Before moving to the United States four years ago, Labovitz and a cast of 20 performed the musical more than 70 times in Europe.
"The current cast has been rehearsing for two-years now," Labovitz said. "The American version has added dancing and some changes in the music and lyrics. The kids helped with so many new ideas!"
Throughout the years, Labovitz has produced several musicals with her sister, Dannie, including "A Slice of Saturday Night," "Finians Rainbow," "Grease," and "The Final."
The cast is young, but extremely talented, Labovitz said. "I am amazed at the time and effort each has devoted to the musical."
Labovitz currently resides in Venetia with her husband, Larry, who not only designed the set for the musical but is making his first stage appearance.
"I hope this story will open the eyes of the audience to God's love and the redeeming power of Jesus Christ," Labovitz said.
"They Said Yes" is sponsored by Jesus Fellowship Church in Bethel Park. To order tickets, call724-413-3251 or e-mail silvischuler@hotmail.com. Tickets may also be purchased at the door.
