Stage 62 will perform Music of Pittsburgh at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23 at the Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall, 300 Beechwood Ave., Carnegie. "This one won't raise any eyebrows," promised Stage 62 president Rob James, referring to the "off-putting title" of the previous production "Urinetown." Instead, the August show will be a tribute to performers, composers and lyricists from the Pittsburgh area. "We have very rich ties to Broadway and musical theater here in the Pittsburgh," James said. "Too many people are unaware of this wonderful heritage." The final roster of songs for Music of Pittsburgh, Stage 62's annual fundraiser/friend-raiser, is still taking shape, but certain numbers have been finalized. While the company has a rich history of producing Stephen Sondheim musicals, Stage 62 will pay special homage to Broadway's two other Stephens: Stephen Flaherty and Stephen Schwartz.
Flaherty, born in Pittsburgh in 1960, composed the scores to Ragtime, Seussical and several other Broadway hits with his partner Lynn Ahrens. Music of Pittsburgh will feature Rag Time's title song (opening) and the haunting "Back to Before." Stephen Schwartz, a 1968 alumnus of Carnegie Mellon University, is the composer/lyricist of numerous Broadway successes including Godspell, Pippin, The Baker's Wife, Children of Eden and Wicked. While other Schwartz songs will be performed, Stage 62's standout mezzo, Becki Toth has already chosen to sing "Meadowlark" from The Baker's Wife. Carnegie has its own connection to Broadway. Gerome Ragni (1935-1991) wrote the book and lyrics (with James Rado) for the iconic 60s musical Hair. Ragni, one of 10 children, was raised in East Carnegie and lived in the building that now houses favorite Carnegie eatery, CIAO! Stage 62 plans a Hair medley including "Age of Aquarius," Let the Sun Shine...." Stage 62 will pay tribute to Pittsburgh musical super stars Gene Kelley with numbers from Singin' in the Rain and On the Town and Shirley Jones: Oklahoma and The Music Man. Another CMU alumnus and Stage 62 favorite, Patrick Wilson, will also be honored. Wilson played Raoul in the film version of Phantom of the Opera, "The challenge is how to fit in all the Pittsburgh greats," laughed James. "We haven't been able to squeeze in Henry Mancini yet!" The program will include a silent auction offering dinners at popular Pittsburgh restaurants, and a dessert reception following the performance. The musical fun continues during the reception with Stage 62's increasingly popular "Juke Box." For an extra donation, audience members can select favorite songs to be song by their favorite Stage 62 performer..... Stage 62, the resident theater company of the Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall, is embarking on its 46th season, and has been performing in the Music Hall since 1990.
