While most of the attention in the South Hills will be focused upon Bethel Park hosting Canon-McMillan (see related story), there will be plenty of other interesting football contests in the region Friday, Oct. 17 as playoff spots are up for grabs. Some of the key clashes feature: USC at Peters Township While the host Indians are coming off a 39-6 loss to Bethel Park, the Panthers posted their first win in the conference when they routed Baldwin, 35-0. The USC win marked a milestone for head coach Jim Render. He recorded his 327th victory, making him the second winningest coach in Pennsylvania history. Render stands at 327-106-7.
Reed Apfelbaum led the Panthers with three touchdown runs measuring 4, 4 and 1 yards. Clay Ilkin grabbed a 35-yard scoring strike from Alex Park, who completed 6 of 11 attempts for 105 yards. Alex Romah tacked on a 1-yard run for USC's final score. David Cort kicked three extra points and Steve Lias caught a two-point conversion pass from Mike Shogry. In the Indians' loss to BP, Keith Stanich scored on a four-yard run with 5:54 remaining. Both USC and PT have one win in the Great Southern Conference. Baldwin at Mt. Lebanon After a heart-breaking loss to Canon-McMillan, Mt. Lebanon looks to remain in the playoff hunt when the Blue Devils host winless Baldwin. Lebo is 1-6 overall but 1-2 in the conference. Lebo led the Big Macs, 28-14, at halftime before surrendering 21 unanswered points in a 35-28 loss. Andrew Cappucci spearheaded the Blue Devils. He completed 12 of 24 passes for 192 yards and three for all four, first half touchdowns. Cappucci completed two scoring strikes to Michael Martin as well as Thomas Sims and Julian Valdiserri. Elizabeth-Forward at Chartiers Valley The Colts are licking their wounds after a 33-0 loss to undefeated Thomas Jefferson. CV played without quarterback Santino Coury. The versatile senior was lost for the season when he suffered a knee injury against Trinity. Coury had thrown for 519 yards, rushed for 450 and scored three times in the first six weeks of the season. The loss of Coury was evident as the Colts managed just 80 total yards of offense and five first downs. With the loss, CV dropped to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the Big Seven Conference. EF is 4-3 overall after a non-league win over Derry, 38-19. Cornell at Canevin The Crusaders improved to 3-4 in the Century Conference with a 21-0 win over Northgate. Against the Flames, Matt Butter tossed a pair of touchdown passes to Dan Hrapla (8 and 5 yards) while Jeff Dobbins rambled 105 yards on 23 carries for the other score (4 yards). Cornell is fresh off its first win of the season against South Fayette. Steel Valley at South Fayette The Lions look to recover from their upset loss to Cornell, 27-26. SF led until seven seconds remained in the contest when Ed Bretch hauled in a two-point conversion pass from Mark Rucker after he had scored on a 4-yard run. Rucker scored three times in the game. Jeff Davis led the Lions with 101 yards on 17 carries. He scored all four touchdowns. Christian Brumbaugh completed 9 of 13 passes for 176 yards and one score. Brumbaugh is 85 of 150 for 1,053 yards and four scores this season. Keystone Oaks at Sto-Rox The Golden Eagles eked out a double-overtime win, 14-7, against Quaker Valley to remain unbeaten at 7-0 as they head into their Century Conference clash with Sto-Rox. The Vikings are also undefeated after edging South Park, 20-17. Though Dion Wiegand rolled up 205 yards and rushed for one score, Corey Bellovich proved the difference against QV. The senior signal caller hooked up with Dan Ammar for a 10-yard TD to seal the win in the second overtime. Travis Mitro kicked the extra point. Bellovich connected on 8 of 17 aerials for 121 yards. Bentworth at Chartiers-Houston The Buccaneers look to snap a two-game losing streak when the host the Bearcats. Though Char-Houston jumped to a 14-3 lead on a pair of touchdown runs of 37 and 53 yards by Brad Banas, Serra Catholic roared back to post a 51-21 victory in the teams' previous Black Hills Conference clash. Banas led the Bucs with 151 yards on 21 carries. D'Juan Davis scored the final touchdown of the game for CH by grabbing a 3-yard strike from Evan Bender. The Bucs are 3-2 in the conference and 5-2 overall. South Park at Seton-La Salle In the lone Saturday, Oct. 18 contest on tap, the Rebels host South Park at Chartiers Valley Stadium. The Rebels are coming off an 18-0 win over Steel Valley. The triumph marked the fourth shutout of the season for SLS. Anthony Zwickle rolled up 104 yards and scored on a 12-yard rush while Anthony Rizza and Mitch Cunningham also ran for scores of 2 and 1 yards respectively. With the win, SLS improved to 6-1 overall and in the Century Conference.
