BP contractor killed in fight

By Terri T. Johnson, Almanac staff writer, tjohnson@thealmanac.net

A well-known Bethel Park business owner died early Sunday following a dispute outside his Grey Fox Circle home, said Bethel Park police Chief John Mackey.

The chief said officers were summoned to the house of John Pavlick at 1:25 a.m. Nov. 1 to find him trapped under a car in a yard between two houses. Pavlick, 49, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics at 1:37 a.m.

A spokeswoman for the Allegheny County Coroner's office said Pavlick died of traumatic asphyxiation and his death was ruled a homicide.

Mackey said officers took the driver, Jason Kasper, 35, also of Bethel Park, into custody, initially under suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

"When officers realized there could be something more than just a vehicle accident, they summoned Allegheny (County) homicide detectives. They will be handling the charges," Mackey said.

Bethel Park officers spent Sunday at the scene taking measurements and pictures, Mackey said.

"All information will be shared with the county," the chief said.

Allegheny County police Lt. Bill Palmer said the argument was "over a woman," referring to Tracy Pavlick, John Pavlick's wife.

Palmer said Kasper arrived at the Pavlick house where he and John Pavlick stepped outside and started a physical fight.

At some point, Palmer said Kasper got into this 2002 Buick Regal and Pavlick remained outside. That's when Kasper drove toward Pavlick, striking him with the vehicle, Palmer said.

Kasper remained at the scene until Allegheny County police arrived. He is charged with criminal homicide, DUI and homicide by vehicle while DUI, Palmer said. Kasper remains in Allegheny County Jail without bond. A hearing is set for Friday, Nov. 6.

No one else was injured.

Pavlick owned Pavlick Roofing on Industrial Boulevard in Bethel Park. The family run company has been there since 1964.
