Teen choir readies for fall performance

By Lorraine Gregus Columnist lgregus@thealmanac.net

Needing all the help I can get in the singing department, I'm usually drawn to choirs and choruses featuring youth or young adults and often those ensembles having more developed, trained voices.

The South Hills provides many opportunities to enjoy the performing arts locally, especially those giving top billing to area artists. Bringing neighborhood talent and entertaining productions close to home almost always draws a crowd.

At 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, outstanding teen voices will wake up the South Hills as The Junior Mendelssohn Choir takes the stage for its 23rd year.

Twenty-eight students representing 16 high schools will make their presence known as they fill Westminster Presbyterian Church in Upper St. Clair with Faure's "Requiem" and other memorable selections.

Once accepted into this prestigious choir, the fine blend of young male and female voices provides a positive influence to peers. Participation gives the students hope for furthering careers in music.

As members of this auditioned ensemble, students receive instruction in sight-singing, diction, voice training and performance from members of the professional core of The Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh.

Balancing school, friends, rehearsals and performances, these young people should be commended for their commitment to themselves as well as to the music industry.

The Junior Mendelssohn is being led by highly qualified voice professionals. Each section (i.e. soprano, alto) has a private instructor. Nancy Klimcheck of Bethel Park has been singing with The Mendelssohn Choir for 16 years. In her eighth year leading the junior sopranos, Nancy most recently performed the role of Eulalie in Marvin Hamlish's production of "Music Man" starring Shirley Jones.

"This is my first year in Junior Mendelssohn and I love the music, especially the beautiful harmonies of the Cantique," said Andrea Groves, a sophomore at Bethel Park High School. "I also enjoy singing Italian opera and Broadway and at my church, Ruthfred Lutheran."

"Junior Mendelssohn has meant a diverse and rich education in many genres of music," added Joseph Helinski of Canonsburg. "I look forward to rehearsals and performances and the time I have with wonderful people who have a love for music."

Lucy Hosni, director of music ministry at St. Patrick Parish in Canonsburg, commented that Joseph has been blessed with a well-trained, beautiful voice. He's a valuable leader of song in the cantor program at St. Patrick.

Eleven local young men and women have proven themselves musically and have accepted the challenge of creating fine performances with The Junior Mendelssohn Choir. By enriching their lives through music, at this young age they are learning to expect the best from themselves.

"Anyone who likes to sing should join a chorus," said MaryColleen Seip, McMurray resident and choir manager for both junior and adult groups. "It's a team sport."

Tickets to this fall concert may be purchased at the door or by calling 412-926-2488.
