SF continues to narrow its options for civic center

The South Fayette Township Community Center Feasibility Study Committee continues to narrow the list of options for a civic center in the township. At the top of the list of items to be included in the civic center are multi-purpose rooms, fitness equipment rooms, multi-use gymnasiums, an indoor walking track and also a pool.
The committee weighed the options based on community desire, local competition, diversity of use, potential revenue generation, availability of facilities and cost to operate and maintain.
Multi-purpose rooms ranked high as something the community desires. Multi-purpose rooms would include spaces that could be used for several different things at different times. The rooms would be utilized by the library, senior center and municipal staff as well as the community as a whole. The committee determined, that six multi-purpose located in the civic center would be ideal.
South Fayette's Parks and Recreation Director, Jerry Males said that at least four rooms would be needed. Consultants James Feath and Jim Watenpool, who have been conducting the feasibility study, recommended six rooms of various sizes.
One room would be a dedicated space for childcare, for folks using the facility to bring their children.
Multi-purpose rooms also ranked high in potential diversity of use and high in potential revenue generation. The rooms could be rented out for a fee to the public to hold meetings and other gatherings.
Ideally, committee members and Males would like to see two gymnasiums in the civic center, which was recommended by Feath and Watenpool. However, Commissioner Sue Caffrey stated that "the budget will dictate how many" gyms are located in the center.
Males said he'd like to see a basketball court and multiple-use court included in the civic center. He said he'd like to see a wooden floor on the basketball court and something like poured-in-place rubber for the multi-use court. The multi-use court could be used for things such as soccer, tennis and volleyball.
Gymnasiums ranked high in terms of community desire, potential diversity of use and potential revenue generation.
Committee members determined, based on survey results, that the township has a high desire for a fitness equipment room featuring fitness machines and weight lifting equipment. The committee then determined that competition locally--within about a mile's radius of the perimeter of the township--is high when it comes to establishments that offer fitness equipment.
The committee also determined from the survey that the desire for both an indoor and outdoor pool is high, while the diversity of use and revenue generation ranked low. The cost to operate and maintain any type of pool ranked high.
Also, the community's desire for an indoor walking track ranked high, with the cost to operate ranking low.
The Feasibility Study Committee will not meet in December. In January, though, the committee will finish its research and plans on presenting information to the township's commissioners in early spring of 2010. Commissioner Greg Curl said the township will be meeting with architects over the next couple of months and plans on hiring an architect to design the civic center by the beginning of next year.
