Polish carols focus of holiday concert

By Lori Humphreys For The Almanac writer@thealmanac.net

The 90-member Pittsburgh Civic Orchestra (PCO) will honor the deep and broad contributions of the region's Polish heritage during their traditional Christmas and Hanukkah music concert at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 19 at the Upper St. Clair High School auditorium.

The program will spotlight "A Polish Christmas" with six Polish carols sung by the Polish Choir of St. Mary of Czestochowa in New Kensington and the accordion virtuoso Henry Doktorski playing a program of traditional Polish Carols.

George Pecoraro Jr., choir director and church organist, has been leading the mixed 15-member choir for the past 13 years. The choir began in the late 1940s and sings at every 7:30 a.m. Sunday Mass, even during the summer.

"This is the first time we have come to the South Hills," Pecoraro said.

Doktorski, who describes himself as a classical accordion musician, will add to the program playing a program of traditional Polish Carols or Karoldy. He turns the popular image of the accordion musician as a player of polka's and popular music for music halls on its ear.

Though he graduated from Park University with a major in piano, Doktorski is an accordion musician who plays Bach and Beethoven on the hand pumped reed organ that was developed in Austria around 1829. He has played 40 concerts with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Tanglewood Festival Orchestra, the Cleveland Chamber Symphony and Pittsburgh's Civic Light Opera Orchestra. Under his fingers, the accordion fills the music hall with an unexpected and beautiful voice. And, he is also a chess teacher.

The program includes the PSO ritual sing along, Leroy Anderson's "Christmas Festival" and "Sleigh Ride," Lucas Rickman's "Hannukah Festival Overture" and Bizet's "Farandole." Santa will also pay a visit.

The PSO is under the direction of Dr. Warren Davidson, conductor of the Slippery Rock Symphony Orchestra and violin, viola and music education strings classes at the university. This is the second concert of the 2009-10 Season of Nationality Programs-Our Pittsburgh Heritage: Preserving Our Heritages Through Music.

Future PSO performances include the music of Germany, Jan. 30; Ireland & Croatia, March 27; and Scotland & Serbia, May 8.

The PSO performs at the Upper St. Clair High School Auditorium.
