Zee Ann Poerio, third grade teacher at St. Louise de Marillac School, was named Teacher of the Year by the Bethel Park Wal-Mart. Part of the company's 12th annual Teacher of the Year program, the award was presented in honor of National Teacher's Day on May 8. Poerio received a $1,000 grant for St. Louise which will be used for technology, a $100 gift card for classroom supplies, a Teacher of the Year polo shirt and a personalized certificate. One teacher has been selected as a local winner by each Wal-Mart store, Sam's Club, Neighborhood Market store and Wal-Mart Distribution Center. Teachers were nominated by members of the community during February and selected by a committee of store or club associates. Poerio has been nationally recognized for her efforts to promote the study of ancient coins and Classics and their benefits in the elementary classroom. The Ancient Coin Museum Project which Poerio initiated at St. Louise, serves as a model for other schools across the country. The school strives to create an academically superior climate in which each child can also develop spiritually, intellectually, physically, emotionally and socially.
The local Teacher of the Year program is the first of a three-tiered program. All local winners have the opportunity to apply for state Teacher of the Year honors, including a $10,000 grant. Each state winner is automatically entered into the national competition. One national winner, announced in the fall, will earn an additional $25,000 school grant. Since the Wal-Mart Teacher of the year program began in 1995, Wal-Mart has honored more than 25,000 teachers nationwide and donated more than $18.5 million to local schools. The company is one of the largest corporate supporters of teachers and education - last year alone giving more than $57 million in support of educational initiatives. Home |
