CV, PT in section showdown
Despite battling injury and adversity, the Colts accomplished more than just their second straight playoff appearance. For starters, they placed fifth in the Allegheny County Wrestling Tournament without four starters in the line-up.
"That's a real testament to how resilient and tough this team is," said Evans. "It's also a testament to our depth and focus."
The Colts boast as many as 30 wrestlers on this year's club. As a result, Evans says that each grappler knows that it is his job to prepare every day, just in case they are needed to fill a line-up spot. "They have to be ready at a moment's notice."
By wrestling quality opponents such as North Allegheny, Franklin Regional and Canon-McMillan, the Colts are prepared for the foray into the WPIAL team tournament.
The Colts displayed a lot of spirit in advancing to the Section 4 championships when they dispatched Upper St. Clair, 33-27.
Noah Wilps, Dom Politi and Tyler Henzell staked CV to a 12-0 lead which swelled to 24-4 with forfeit wins for Mitchell Zajicek and Nick Lytle. Ray Soknich also won by forfeit and Jesse Griffin posted a decision at 138 that assured the CV win and set up the showdown with the Indians.
PT, meanwhile, dispatched Waynesburg, 35-28.
Phil Mary (113) and Andrew Irwin (182) recorded falls for the Indians, who compiled a 6-0 overall record with a 5-0 mark in Section 4B.
"We are excited to wrestle Peters," Evans said. "They are a quality wrestling team. We saw them win the Char-Houston Tournament earlier this year and they really wrestled well. It should be a great opportunity for us to see where our team stands with regards to quality competition."
While there is quality throughout the PT line-up, Evans expects Mary, Tyler Buckiso (120), Luke Palamides (126) and Derrick Evanovich (132) and Zan Kail (160), all winners also against the Raiders, will pose stiff competition for his Colts. Evans singled out those weights as key to the match.
"They will be very important. The PT kids at those weights are really doing a great job this season, so we need to step up and wrestle well at there. The other matches are also crucial, as a lot of the wrestlers are evenly matched. Those other weights could easily decide the outcome."
The real key, however, will be how a big match is handled, particularly by an inexperienced club such as CV, which must match the intensity level of its opponent.
"We have to score more on our feet and defensively not give up any takedowns without a fight. We have to wrestle more aggressively on bottom, and we need to be more opportunistic from the top position. We need to wrestle intelligently, finish well, and not give away any easy falls or bonus points in key match ups."
So as the winner can advance and likely face Canon-McMillan, the No. 1 ranked team in the district. The Big Macs, who were Powerade runners-up and winners in the Virginia Duals, ran their record to 18-0 overall with their shutout win, 79-0, over Montour in first-round team playoff action.
Dalton Macri, Julian Hritsko, Colton Shorts, Sam Minor, Alex Hutchin, Dario Dobbin, William Pihiou, Mark Dami, Zach Thomas, Ian Binotto and Cody Klempay all recorded falls in the triumph.
Should the Indians beat the Colts, then it would set up an interesting battle between Chris Mary and Jason Carpetta. Mary is the CM skipper and uncle to the young Mary from PT. Carpetta, the PT mat boss, is a former Canon-McMillan grappler.
