Peters Township police announced the investigation Thursday after receiving a complaint from Washington County Children and Youth Services.
The agency got a complaint that someone was letting children play sports with concussions or concussion-like symptoms, which prompted police to ask for records concerning such accusations against Peters Township High School football coach Rich Piccinini.
Some parents and a trainer at the school have claimed the coach has ignored concussion problems with some players.
But the coach, and some parents, say he’s being targeted by parents unhappy with their children’s playing time.
Typical Peters : 1/26/2012
Parents complain - always when their 'star' child doesn't get enough playing time. However, if this coach allowed this to happen he should be charged with child endangerment. There has been concussion training in most area schools - was this coach absent from this training?
Parents : 1/26/2012
If the boy has a concussion or concussion-like symptoms and the coach wants him to play, it's the parents' responsibility to say, "No, my son is not playing." Case closed.
Peters football : 1/26/2012
Really!!! parents and school boards get worse every year. Why would a coach ever want to get involoved with that program. It is the same thing almost every year or two.
Interesting? : 1/26/2012
Concussions are serious things and I am sure if an athlete were diagnosed and that was made known to the coach then that kid didn't play. However, I know of one player whose parent insisted he could play even with a concussion. High school isn't the NFL - parents and coaches need to realize that they are messing with a kid's future ability to think and reason. Brain injuries are serious and if it were my kid - he would never play again. It just isn't worth it.
Children & Youth? : 1/26/2012
I tried for a year to get Children and Youth involved in a situation involving my nephew. It was a dangerous situation and guess what? They never once went to his home to investigate! I'm surprised someone from there actually called the police about this. A 9 year old kid doesn't get help but high school football players do? I hope the football players are ok. I wish Children & Youth would have helped the 9 year old when he needed them.
why : 1/26/2012
is this a police matter and not CYS case?
???? : 1/27/2012
Why is this a police matter? This issue should be handled between the school board, the coach and of course the parents of those precious Peters Township Football Players.
Coach Pic : 1/27/2012
This whole situation is getting completely out of hand. Coach DID NOT force any injured player to play. I, including all other hurt/injured players, chose to play because of our love of the game, not by force. Those who had concussions were dealt with in the best possible way by the training staff and coaches. Neurologists cleared players when they were ready. It is unfair to him and this community to involve CYS in this just because a few parents are upset because this sport requires a tough mentality. It is a disgrace that this is being brought upon our township. It makes us as a whole look horrible. Sure there were some problems with Coach and his assistants but there was nothing directed toward a player that could have harmed them in any way.
Only part of the story : 1/27/2012
Finally? There is so much more going on the Attorney General needs to get involved in this district before the state has to take it over. Please help we have been trying to get someones attention. This is not only about sports please investigate you will be amazed at what you will find.
Parenting 101 : 1/27/2012
My son played high school football and if he had had a concussion or concussion-like symtoms, I would not have allowed him to play. As a parent, I have the final say - NOT the coach.
Canon-Mac Mom : 1/27/2012
You have it right, one of the few! With all the stories in the past couple of days, I am astounded about the finger pointing on "whose fault." The parents are in FULL control!!!! They have the final word on these matters. Now, for the parents to run to the School Board with complaints about their youth playing while hurt is revealing. Their actions tell us of their character, and what they think of their own responsibility. Wake up parents. These matters are in YOUR hands, none other.
You are wrong : 1/27/2012
If you convinced a concussed player to play - you are wrong. If you think, as a parent, you have the last word - you are wrong. If the athlete wants to hide an injury - he is wrong. My point is: there will always be a "wrong" somewhere if you want to find one. Peters seems to have "wrong" police that enjoy stirring this kind of stuff.
Players and concussions : 1/27/2012
If a trainer or an expert medical provider says that a player should not play because of an injury, that should be the end of it. It shouldn't be a coach's decision, or even a parent's decision. I can't believe that this discussion has gotten this far. For any coach to think that he can over-rule a medical person - this is sheer folly as well as very dangerous for the athletes involved.
Regardless : 1/28/2012
If you really want to see what can potentially happen to a young person who society wants to "toughen up" because it's "just a headache" MUST watch the ESPN story about the football player injured in a game a few years ago against Duquesne! You will never think twice about concussion symptoms again. Get real people.
parents versus coach : 1/28/2012
Of course all parents are responsible for their kids' welfare BUT the parents are not on the school district payroll and the only control the district has over preventing the travesty of a kid with a head injury playing and risking permanent brain damage is through the coaching staff. When the coaches play injured kids (no player gets on the field if the coach doesn't allow it) it is up to the school board to get rid of the coach. If the school board fails to do so, then CYS and the police should be brought in. Whoever called CYS was right to do so. And, if there is no substance to the complaint, then I'm sure the Peters PD will find that in their investigation. The fact that some people are upset that this matter is being looked into by the most professional law enforcement department in Washington County is disturbing in and of itself. What are you afraid will be found? If Piccinini has done nothing wrong, he and his crew have nothing to fear.
Just a Question : 1/28/2012
I have a question. Of course a parent would not let a child play with a concussion or concussion-like symptoms. What happens when a child is hit really hard during a game and the child is really dizzy and/or gets an instant headache? Is it commond protocall for a coach to put them back in the game or to have them sit out?
