CM grabs top seed

After claiming its 34 section title in school history, 12th straight under head coach Chris Mary, Canon-McMillan grabbed the top seed in the WPIAL Class AAA wrestling team tournament.
The Big Macs are the defending district champions and hoping to make history by winning their fourth straight WPIAL banner. CM is also the reigning PIAA state champion.
Canon-Mac commences with its title defense Wednesday, Jan. 30. The Big Macs host the winner of the pigtail match between Central Catholic and Ringgold at 6 p.m. Also, at Canon-Mac, Peters Township will battle Hampton. The winners meet in the quarterfinals set for the approximately 7:30 the same night.
The Big Macs are undefeated and coasted into the team tournament by defeating McGuffey, 61-9, in the Section 4-AAA finals. The Indians finished as the Section 2-AAA runners-up to Connellsville, which happens to be Canon-Mac’s half of the bracket.
North Allegheny and Franklin Regional are the other top seeds in the Class AAA tournament. The Tigers will face either West Allegheny or Mt. Lebanon in their opener on their home mats. West-A and Lebo square off in a play-in match set for Monday, Jan. 28 at Chartiers Valley.
In Class AA, South Fayette is seeded No. 2 behind Burrell, which earned a first-round bye. The Lions, winners of their first-ever section title, will host South Allegheny at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30. The winner of that match advances to the quarterfinals to battle the victor between Burgettstown at 7:30 p.m. at South Fayette.
Chartiers-Houston earned the No. 4 seed in the Class AA tournament after finishing runner-up to South Fayette in Section 1. The Buccaneers host Yough at 6 p.m. while Bentworth wrestles Avonworth. The winners face off at 7:30 p.m. also at Char-Houston.
Semifinal action as well as championship matches will be held at Chartiers Valley.
Class AA kicks off the Final Four at 6 p.m. while Class AAA follows at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1.
The Class AA championship match will be contested at 2 p.m. After the consolation match at 4:30 p.m. the Class AAA finals will be held at approximately 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2.
