Canonsburg Borough Council has awarded an estimated $1.3 million in contracts for renovations at the Canonsburg Borough Building.

The renovations will make the borough building handicapped accessible and give the police department additional space.

Borough Manager Terry Hazlett said the renovation project will begin in mid-February and will take about a year to complete.

Contracts were awarded to DiMarco Construction Inc. for $613,550 for general construction; Newman Plumbing for $142,822; D&G Mechanical for $111,625 for mechanical work; and Vern’s Electric for $162,446.

According to the renovation plan, the police department will be moved to the first floor (formerly the library) and the municipal office will be located on the second floor.

The project includes plans to make the restrooms ADA compliant.

The borough has received a $650,000 matching state grant for the work.

Also, Canonsburg police detectives Alex Coghill and Charles Tenney were presented with commendations of merit for their efforts in solving a 2010 homicide and identifying the Pittsburgh drug supplier whose heroin caused the fatal overdose of James O’Donnell in 2011.

Jose Luciano-Herrera was found guilty of homicide and conspiracy to commit homicide in connection with the murder of Jose Enammorado Medina, a Honduran man who had been stabbed to death Feb. 28, 2010. Medina’s body was found near railroad tracks in Canonsburg.

In January, Saul Lopes-Viera admitted to selling balloons of “black tar” heroin Feb. 11, 2011, to a woman who shared the heroin with O’Donnell. He was found dead in a Canonsburg home Feb. 12. Lopes-Viera pleaded guilty in federal court to charges that he distributed heroin in Washington and Allegheny counties and received a 12-year jail sentence.

The detectives accepted the commendations from Mayor David Rhome on behalf of the Canonsburg Police Department, saying that the entire department played a role in solving the crimes.
