Politicians to speak at LWV luncheonPublished Feb 11, 2013 at 10:04 am (Updated Feb 11, 2013 at 10:04 am)
The League of Women Voters of Washington County has invited the nine state legislators who represent parts of Washington County in Harrisburg to the League’s annual legislative luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 15 at Angelo’s Restaurant, 2109 N. Franklin Drive, Washington. Members of the public are welcome to attend.
Those invited include Sens. Tim Solobay, Matt Smith and Richard Kasunic, and Reps. Rick Saccone, John Maher, Jesse White, Peter Daley, Brandon Neuman, and Pamela Snyder. Most have indicated they will attend.
The luncheon is an information session in which discussion will focus on three topics of interest to the LWV. The first issue concerns the election process in Pennsylvania. Noting that some other states have increased access, improved ballot verifiability, eased the registration process, limited political contributions, and even reduced the size of legislatures, the LWV asks what initiatives the legislators would support to improve elections in the state.
The second issue for discussion is the funding of public education. Legislators will be asked how they would ensure equal access to quality public education for all students.
Social services is the third topic, and legislators will be asked how to make sure that those in the lowest income levels can be helped to meet basic needs of child care and health insurance when they are earning barely sustainable wages.
Finally, legislators will be asked to share their top three legislative goals for the upcoming session.
The cost of the luncheon is $25. Reservations should be made to LWVWC President Heather Burtch at email@example.com or 724-746-8717. Checks can be made out to LWVWC and mailed to 175 Hunting Creek Road, Canonsburg, PA 15317.
