The Mt. Lebanon School District will re-examine guidelines governing how students from Markham Elementary School are assigned to the district’s two middle schools. For years, some parents have complained the current principles are applied arbitrarily and inconsistently.

The school board’s policy committee, chaired by Mary Birks, will begin the review at its March meeting.

School board president Elaine Cappucci said the guidelines were created in 1997. They were reviewed in 2006, but left unchanged at that time.

According to Cappucci, their main objectives were to balance the populations of each middle school, while providing some relief for families living furthest from one middle school or the other. Additionally, the guidelines forbid the division of any school population on a permanent basis.

“I would certainly like to see a review,” said board vice-president Lawrence Lebowitz. “Since I began serving on the board I have consistently heard concerns from residents on this issue. With a major construction project ongoing that may impact students’ ability to walk to school, I think it’s a good time to review these guidelines.”

The next policy committee meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. March 5, in the Jefferson Middle School Library.
