It may be hard for many people to get excited about the planting season, but it’s just around the corner, said Laura Delach, master gardener coordinator for Penn-State Extension in Washington.

“You can start putting in lettuce, peas and radishes around St. Patrick’s Day,” said Delach. “As long as you can work the ground, you can go ahead and plant [these] cool crops.”

In the meantime, Delach said there’s some preparation that needs to be done before planting, most importantly getting the soil right for the intended crop.

“You have to check if your soil has a high pH or a low pH,” she explained. “The basis to all planting is the soil.”

It’s tips like these that area residents can learn at the Gardening and Agricultural Fair being held from 1-3 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Cecil Township municipal building. It is free and open to the public.

Shirley Burns, chairwoman of the township parks and recreation board, said she presented the idea for the fair to her fellow board members and all decided it would be a great offering.

“We’re looking to breathe new life into the board,” said Burns, who, like most of her colleagues, is new to the recreation board.

She added, “I’m also thinking of proposing an arts and crafts class.”

Other board members are: Kathy Mikulsi, Suzanne Campbell, Al DePaoli, Bob Abt, Arlene Curry and Lisa Black.

While the board looks for new offerings, it will continue to sponsor events such as an Easter egg hunt and car cruise, Burns said.
