On Feb. 10, the Peters Township Police Department responded to a report in the 200 block of Stonebrooke Drive when the resident heard a commotion outside. On checking, the homeowner found the family dog with a raccoon hanging from its neck.
The resident killed the raccoon and the carcass was picked up by the United States Department of Agriculture for testing, police said.
On Feb. 21, the results of the tests determined the raccoon was rabid, police said.
The dog is current on its rabies vaccination and had a booster shot. The dog will be quarantined for 90 days at the resident’s home must remain on a leash at all times when outdoors, police said.
The Department of Agriculture will be completing compliance checks to insure that the quarantine is being observed.
As a safety precaution, pet owners are encouraged to make sure that their dogs and cats are up to date on their rabies vaccinations. Pet owners should also make every effort to keep their pets from coming into contact with wild animals.
