The search for a new superintendent in the Peters Township School District is progressing as the school board is expected to begin the first round of interviews within the month.

During a board meeting Feb. 19, board member David Hvizdos, chairman of the personnel committee, said a closed meeting was held Feb. 14 with the search firm hired by the board. Advertisements for a new superintendent have been placed in numerous publications.

The district has been without a superintendent since Nina Zetty resigned in October, effective Dec. 1, to take a similar position at the Gateway School District. Joseph Dimperio is acting superintendent on a per diem basis of $500 a day without benefits.

Hvizdos said the board hopes to have a new superintendent in place before the start of the 2013-14 school year.

Focus groups and meetings with the public will be held before a final decision is made. Dates for the meetings will be advertised at various locations, including the district’s website.

The first round of interviews by the board will be conducted March 19-20, Hvizdos said.

To ensure security in district buildings is state-of-the-art, the board approved motions to award a bid to Allegheny Safe and Lock to provide swipe access cards for $9,794. The current system is also serviced by Allegheny Safe and Lock, said board member Ron Dunleavy, chair of the buildings and grounds committee.

The board also approved a motion to award a bid, also to Allegheny Safe and Lock, at $10,800 for video phones in five district building. The district solicited bids from three firms; Allegheny Safe and Lock, Omega Security Services that bid $14,500, and Dave Gilchrist Security, which did not respond.

A motion to award a bid, again to Allegheny Safe and Lock, for $7,360 to provide wireless security in each building was approved unanimously. Omega Security Services bid $11,200 and Dave Gilchrist Security did not respond, Dunleavy said.

A contract was approved with the Pennsylvania School Boards Association to organize the district’s policy manual for $5,500, and for a policy maintenance program for an annual cost of $999.

In other action, the board:

• Approved the 2013-14 Intermediate Unit 1 General Operational Budget for $549,522. The district’s share is $73,032, which reflects no increase from the current budget.

• Accepted a donation of $1,000 from the Boys Lacrosse Club to be applied toward the purchase of new equipment for the high school weight room.

• Authorized the district to advertise for replacement school buses.

• Accepted a donation of $9,725 from the Peters Township Education Foundation to be distributed to staff members at the high school, middle school and Bower Hill Elementary in the form of grants.

• Announced a finance committee meeting will be open to the public and held at 6:30 p.m. March 4.

Next regular meeting is at 7:30 p.m. March 18.
