Aloe Brothers, the owners of the former Mayview Hospital site in South Fayette Township, recently submitted an application to the township’s zoning hearing board requesting the ability to mine on the property. Ryan Eggleston, township manager, said the application from Aloe Brothers to mine coal at the former hospital site was discussed at the board of commissioners’ Feb. 20 meeting.

Eggleston said the zoning hearing board will meet at 7 p.m. Feb. 27 to discuss the application. The board, which usually meets in the municipal building, may move its meeting to the senior center, depending on how large a crowd attends, Eggleston said.

Also at the Feb. 20 meeting, the board voted to authorize advertisement of the township’s 2013 millage level. Eggleston said the board should vote on the millage rate at its March voting meeting. The advertised rate is 3.48 mills, which is the adjusted rate after the county reassessment. Last year’s rate was 3.84.

• The township is moving forward with wrapping up the paperwork for the closing of the new Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC building on the property of the former Star City Theater. Eggleston said the closing should be finished within a month to six weeks. The purchase price for the property is $1.66 million, plus an extra $100,000 for the township if plans move forward to convert the former theater into a civic center.

The building is to be constructed on about 2.64 acres adjacent to the former Star City Theater. A total of 11.6 acres, including the land owned by the township, is being subdivided in order to accommodate a new driveway and extra traffic lanes. The building, which will house pediatric outpatient services, will be four stories with a total of 60,000 square feet.

• Commissioners are considering expanding the size of three township boards. If passed, the planning commission will increase from five to seven members, the parks and recreation board will increase from five to seven and the zoning hearing board, which currently has three members and two alternates, will increase to five members and two alternates.

• The March voting meeting time and date has been changed to 8 p.m. March 27. The workshop meeting will be held at its regular time and date at 7:30 p.m. March 13.
