McMahon’s hat trick highlights CV’s win; Recktenwald, Cochrane lead PT into semis
Thanks to a hat trick from Cullen McMahon, Chartiers Valley defeated Moon, 4-1, at the Mt. Lebanon Ice Arena and advanced to the semifinals in the Pennyslvania Intercholastic Hockey League Class AA playoffs.
The Colts, who are seeded third, will battle No. 2 Latrobe at 9 p.m. March 12 at the RMU Island Sports Arena while No. 1 Bishop Canevin faces off against Pine Richland at 7 p.m.
McMahon staked the Colts to a 3-0 lead. After an unassisted tally at 9:44 of the first frame, McMahon registered his second goal, off an assist from Kevin Kocak at 13:09 of the period.
Kocak and Sean Brkovich dished up the puck to McMahon at 3:37 of the second stanza for the hat trick.
Trevor Handlovitch prevented Noah Stevenson from recording the shutout when he scored for the Tigers. Brett Dunham and Austin Murphy assisted the goal at the 7:28 mark.
Anthony Franks, off an assist from McMahon, completed the second-period scoring. His tally came for the Colts at 16:59.
While Stevenson turned backed 18 shots, his Colts recorded 25 shots on goal.
In Class AAA, Peters Township defeated Central Catholic, 7-3, at the Southpointe Iceoplex.
With the victory, the Indians, who are seeded No. 1 in the tournament, advanced to the PIHL semifinals set for March 13 at the RMU Island Sports Center. They will face No. 5 State College at 5:45 p.m. while No. 2 Bethel Park battles No. 3 North Allegheny. Action begins at 7:45 p.m.
Brady Cochrane racked up the hat trick for the Indians while Trevor Recktenwald registered two goals and two assists.
Recktenwald initiated the scoring 82 seconds into the contest. Carter Ekberg assisted on the goal.
Cochrane then scored on the power play at 12:31. Giovanni Carbonara assisted.
Thirty-two seconds later, Matt Amelio closed out the first-period scoring. Jacob Dachille and Evan Opeka garnered assists on the play.
Though the Vikings responded with a pair of goals from Nick Tabaka and Jesse Yeckel, Recktenwald and Cochrane put the game out of reach with their scores late in the second period.
Ekberg and Alexander Debolt assisted on Recktenwald’s tally at 4:36. Recktenwald and Carbonara had the assists on Cochrane goal as time expired.
While Anthony Parrucci narrowed the gap for the Vikings, Cochrane and Adam Alavi sealed the victory for PT with their third-period scores at 7:38 and 12:24. Debolt and Samuel Barnes assisted Cochrane while Recktenwald dished off to Alavi.
In the nets for the Indians, Brian Baker made 25 saves. PT placed 42 shots on goal.
