Transport coal by train instead of trucks

Since I frequently walk Boyce Mayview Park and drive Mayview, Boyce and Morganza roads, I read the article on mining coal at the former Mayview Hospital property with great interest. I don’t mind the mining itself – this property is probably the only part of the Chartiers Valley that has not yet been mined. I’m wondering what the developer is thinking by proposing to transport the coal by truck. An average of 50 round trips per day works out to a giant dump truck passing every five minutes. Think of the noise, pollution and damage to the road surface!

There is a better way. A little used rail line runs right through the property. The daily output of 500-1,000 tons of coal will fill between four and nine hopper cars. And one train per day is going to generate much less noise, take the strain off the roads, and even save fuel.
