Peters alum named president of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology

James C. Conwell, a graduate of Peters Township High School, was recently named president of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind., one of the nation’s top programs in undergraduate engineering education.

Conwell, a native of Peters Township, will assume the presidency May 1.

He is the son of Jim Conwell of Columbiana, Ohio, and the late Jean Conwell.

After graduating from Peters Township High School, Conwell earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Tennessee, and later received his doctorate in mechanical engineering at Vanderbilt University. In 1983, before earning his doctorate, Conwell became a senior engineer for Procter and Gamble.

In 1990, he became an associate professor of mechanical engineering at Louisiana State University, and in 1993, he became chairman of the department of mechanical engineering at Grove City College.

Before becoming president at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Conwell was vice president of Jacobs Engineering Group, one of the world’s largest and most diverse providers of engineering and technical services to the automotive, defense, mining, oil and gas, aerospace and pharmaceutical industries.

He worked with Sverdrup Engineering, a company involved in wind tunnel designs.

Conwell is married to Angela Conwell, also a mechanical engineer, and they have two grown children.
