Matt Wilps earned All-America status for the second straight season as a wrestler for the University of Pittsburgh.

The Chartiers Valley High School graduate finished third at the NCAA Division I championships. The 197-pound grappler cruised to a 17-2 technical fall over Oregon State’s Taylor Meeks in the bronze-medal match during the tournament held in Des Moines, Iowa.

Wilps finished his career as a Panther with 129 wins, good for fifth place on Pitt’s all-time list.

Wilps, ironically, capped his scholastic career at CV with a third-place finish at the PIAA state championships. He was 110-40 in high school.

In addition to his two time All-America honors at Pitt, Wilps was a three-time NCAA qualifier and a three-time EWL Champion. Twice, he was named the EWL Outstanding Wrestler.

The 23-year-old son of Jeff and Lisa Wilps will graduate this spring with a degree in economics and psychology. He has two other brothers that wrestle, his teammate, Tyler, and Noah, who competes for Char Valley. He also has a sister, Claire.
