With seven veterans back in the line-up, including three of the team’s top hitters, Bethel Park has reason for optimism this spring. The Lady Hawks surely expect to be a better than .500 club this softball season. In 2012, they finished 10-10 overall.

Despite the addition of Chartiers Valley and Brashear, BP plans to contend for the Section 4-AAAA banner along with reigning WPIAL champion, Canon-McMillan, Peters Township, which is off to a 6-0 start, Baldwin, Mt. Lebanon and Upper St. Clair.

“I believe all of the opponents are tough and with the addition of two more teams, it makes it an even harder section,” said BP manager Heather Scott. “As most, our goals are to win sections and qualify for the WPIAL playoffs. We will go into every game expecting to out-play and out-perform our opponents. Every game, we have to play our best. We can’t take any team lightly.”

Though they finished 4-6 in the division last season, teams cannot overlook the Lady Hawks because they are one year older and determined.

Shelby Reid breaks in sophomore pitchers Jess Cook and Taylor Andres. Both will share time on the mound while Reid, who batted .432 in 2012, catches their pitches.

Jen Rimmel and Molly Welsh return their defensive skills to the outfield as well as their offensive talents. They were BP’s top hitters with .486 and .454 batting averages, respectively.

While Sammi Wozniak is a veteran outfielder, Haley Lazzari demonstrates versatility. She possesses experience in the outfield as well as at the infield positions. Lexie Parinalle and Jenn Ruminski lend their experience and talent to the infield.

Scott also expects contributions from utility players Kaitlyn Campbell, Jamie Smith and Julia Sherwin as well as infielders Haley Reid and Morgan Crawford.

“We have a dedicated group of girls, who have worked hard to increase their speed and power,” explained Scott. “They are strong hitters but we need to work on our base running. Best of all, we have a good work ethic as a team.”
