Vulcano to West Librty
Garrett Vulcano has accepted a scholarship to play football at West Liberty University. The Chartiers-Houston High School senior will be a member of the Hilltoppers, who will play their inaugural season in the Mountain East Conference this fall.
The 6-1, 200-pound linebacker dominated the action in Class A of the WPIAL. In the Black Hills Conference, which featured four-time state champion Clairton, Vulcano garnered MVP defensive honors. He led the Buccanneers with 130 tackles, averaging 14 per game. He also managed 3.5 sacks, two interceptions, a fumble recovery and safety.
In each of the previous three season, he also recorded over 100 tackles.
Vulcano was named to the Pennsylvania Associated Press Class A football team. He was also picked to play in the PFSCA East/West and Tri-County All-Star games. An Almanac Premier Pigskin performer, Vulcano was named second team all-state. He ranked third in the state through nine weeks on the MaxPreps list of tackle leaders.
On the offensive side of the ball, Vulcano recorded 18 receptions for 296 yards and four touchdowns as a slot receiver. In his junior season, he led the Bucs defense with 149 tackles, including ten for a loss, and a berth in the WPIAL Class A playoffs.
In addition to football, Vulcano dominated the action on the mats. As a 195-pound grappler, he participated in the prestigious Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic and finished his career as the all-time winningest wrestler in school history.
This season, he compiled a 45-3 record, complete with his third consecutive section championship. He was a district and regional winner as well as the PIAA state runner-up.
The son of Frank, Jr. and Susan Vulcano of Houston is an honors student, maintaining a 3.46 GPA. He will major in physical education at West Liberty, which competed at the NCAA Division II level in football.
