Movie, discussion planned on dyslexia
Sparked by the airing of an award-winning HBO film, local adults with dyslexia, parents and educators are coming together for an evening of discussion that could mean big changes to the way in which children with dyslexia are taught to read.
On April 11, the movie “The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia” will be shown at 7 p.m. at the Chartiers Valley Stadium 18 in Bridgeville. The free showing will be followed by a question and answer session with experts on dyslexia, assessment, multi-sensory instruction and accommodations. The event is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Branch of the International Dyslexia Association (PBIDA) and The Provident Charter School for Children with Dyslexia.
This inspiring documentary provides personal and uplifting accounts, clears up the misconceptions, and helps families understand that struggles with reading in the early years of school often move to the background as other strengths emerge.
“A 20-year study out of Yale indicates that 20 percent of the population has some degree of dyslexia. That means there are over 3,100 children within a 10-mile radius of Pittsburgh who would benefit if parents and educators had a greater awareness of dyslexia and took action to create change,” said Christine Seppi, chair of the Pittsburgh region of the PBIDA.
Included in the film are interviews with super-achieving dyslexics revered in their fields – from Sir Richard Branson and financier Charles Schwab to politician Gavin Newsom and attorney David Boies.
