The staff and PTO at Franklin Elementary School and the Bethel Park High School are working together to co-sponsor a spaghetti dinner fundraiser for two Bethel Park students who have experienced recent losses in their lives.
The dinner will benefit high school junior Tyler Parker and his sister, Katelyn, who lost both of their parents in the past 18 months. Their father was killed in an accident in 2011, and their mother passed away unexpectedly after Christmas.
The dinner will be held from 3-7 p.m. May 5 in the Bethel Park High School cafeteria at 309 Church Road.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children and may be purchased at any Bethel Park School District office. Dinners include pasta, meatballs, salad, rolls and butter. Desserts may be purchased at the bake sale table.
There will be a Chinese auction and a sale of orange and black Swarovski crystal bracelets for $15 each, which will also be on sale in all district offices.

• The Bethel Park High School Counseling Department will host a Junior Parent Night at 6:30 p.m. May 1 in the high school auditorium to discuss the college application process. The evening is coordinated by BPHS Guidance Counselor Michael Bruce, the Class of 2014 counselor. Guest speakers will be Barry Duerr, associate director of Admissions at the University of Pittsburgh, who will speak about what college admissions offices look for in successful applications; and Mike Rose, student recruiter of the Community College of Allegheny County’s South Campus, who will speak about Dual Enrollment, the Transfer Program to a four-year college from CCAC and other CCAC-related items.
Bruce will discuss how Naviance (the BPHS College and Career Software) plays an important role in applying to colleges and universities, and share a timeline to prepare for applying to colleges.
All Bethel Park High School juniors and their parents are encouraged to attend this informative evening to properly prepare for the beginning of the college application process in August.
• The Bethel Park High School Government Association will host an outdoor movie night at 8:45 p.m. May 3 in the Bethel Park High School Courtyard. Doors open at 8 p.m. Shown will be the PG rated “Rise of the Guardians” and attendees are asked to bring something to sit on. There is no admission fee but there is a suggested donation of $5 to benefit the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State’s Children’s Hospital to help children with cancer. Chicken sandwiches, pasta, popcorn, cotton candy, nachos and baked goods will be offered for sale.

The Canonsburg Planning Commission will hold a meeting at 7 p.m. May 2 to discuss a request from the Frank Sarris Library Board to approve a 76-space parking lot. Additionally, the commission will hear of a proposed subdivision and site plan for the Strabane Industrial Park to include three warehouse buildings and a storage area.
Keystone Oaks’ Project Succeed alternative education program will commemorate its 25th anniversary by holding an open house celebration at 6:30 p.m. May 3 in the Keystone Oaks Middle School cafeteria.
In June, as part of Keystone Oaks High School’s commencement ceremony, Project Succeed will graduate its 2,000th student, as well as 73-year-old Eileen Shields, the program’s oldest ever graduate.
Mt. Pisgah Presbyterian Church, 31 Warriors Road, will hold a lunch, yard sale and bake sale from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. May 18. The yard sale is $10 per space to sell in the parking lot. Unsold items are to be taken home and sellers are to bring their own tables. Setup is at 6 a.m., the lunch menu will be available from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and includes hot sausage sandwiches, pulled pork sandwiches and chicken salad croissants. Macaroni salad and haluski will be available for sale. Hotdogs will be available beginning at 10 a.m., along with lemonade, soft drinks and water, and beginning at 6 a.m. there will be coffee and donuts for sale. For more information, call 412-921-8444.
McDonald Parks and Recreation Board will sponsor a summer tennis program at Heritage Park. Classes begin June 11 and will be held each week until Aug. 6. There are classes for children ages 5-17, and classes for adults.
Adult classes are Monday evenings and children’s classes are Tuesdays.
Pick up a registration form for times. Forms are available at the borough office, McDonald Pharmacy, Heritage Library and the China Dragon. Cost is $60 for adults, $40 for children and $20 for each additional child in the same family. For information, call 724-926-4617. Registration is by May 27.
The Paper Exchange will shred confidential papers from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. April 27 at the Public Works yard, 1250 Lindendale Drive off Cedar Boulevard. The cost is $5 per box with the first box free. Cash or checks accepted.
• Gov. Tom Corbett announced April 16 that Mt. Lebanon was recognized for its intergovernmental cooperation through the creation of a regional municipal recycling competition to boost the waste being recycled. The competition brought together 10 diverse Pittsburgh communities in the South Hills and increased the annual rate of recycling by more than 10 percent.
• Mt. Lebanon Commission is seeking applications with resumes from residents interested in serving on a municipal volunteer board. Boards with openings include Board of Appeals (codes), Community Relations (at-large and ward 1) and Traffic. Terms will begin immediately. A description of each board, its meeting schedule and term lengths can be found at www.mtlebanon.org. Boy Scout Troop #1320 out of McMurray will hold a car wash from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. April 27 at Bruester’s on Valley Brook Road.
• There will be a Gift of Life Blood Drive and Bone Marrow Screening in memory of the late Carol Foley from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. May 5 in the Peters Township Fire Department, 245 E. McMurray Road. • The family bike ride on Arrowhead Trail will be held from 10-11 a.m. May 4. The ride is in celebration of bike safety month and for bike inspections if preregistered. The cost is $5 for residents and $8 for non-residents. Deadline for bike inspection is April 26. Preregister at the Community Recreation Center or online.
• The deadline for the May 23 bus trip to the Heinz History Center, Spaghetti Warehouse and the Carnegie Science Center has been extended until May 8. The cost is $95 per person and includes transportation, the History Center, lunch at the Spaghetti Warehouse and the Carnegie Science Center with the meal gratuity. Departure is at 9:30 a.m. with return at about 5:30 p.m. Register at the Community Recreation Center or online at the recreation department website.
The Scott Township pool will open May 25.
• Township residents are asked not to feed deer as feeding of wildlife is disruptive to the natural feeding habits.
South Fayette Township
The South Fayette School District Kennywood Day is May 23. Tickets go on sale April 30.
Upper St. Clair Township
Upper St. Clair Community Day 2013 is May 18. Contact the township’s Department of Recreation and Leisure Services at 412-221-1099 to offer suggestions or to volunteer.
