The Mt. Lebanon school board voted 6-3 to approve the final budget for the 2013-2014 school year at its May 20 meeting. Board members Dale Ostergaard, Scott Goldman and Dan Remely all voted no. The new budget totals $83,164,503, a 1.9 percent increase over the previous year.

The district's new millage rate, adjusted for the latest county assessment, is 22.61 mills. In dollar terms, that translates to $2,261 on $100,000 of assessed value. The millage rate consists of 13.61 mills for salaries and increments of staff, 3.98 mills for debt service and 5.02 mills for general purposes.

School board president Elaine Cappucci explained the tax impact on individuals homeowners would be a function of both the millage rate and assessment values.

“The school district has no control over the assessment or the tax impact of the assessment,” she said. “Unlike municipalities, we cannot receive a windfall from property tax increases. We are limited to the 1.7 percent allowed by the Act 1 Index and any applicable exceptions.”
