New yoga studio opens in South Fayette
Inside an inconspicuous office building on Mayview Road in South Fayette Township is a warm and inviting yoga studio that just opened.
On July 15, Updog Yoga opened its doors, and an official grand opening celebration and open house was held on July 21 with hors d’oeuvres and other refreshments. The space features a 900 square-foot yoga studio as well as another 500 square-foot changing area.
Business partners and friends Dawna Dodd and Nicole Werger, who goes by Nicci, co-own Updog Yoga, the name of which comes from a popular yoga pose. Dodd, who lives in McDonald and was raised in Canonsburg, has a background in art and designed the studio. Werger of Upper St. Clair, who recently graduated from college, handles the business portion. Both Dodd and Werger are instructors at the studio, which also has three other instructors.
“We’re so excited,” Werger said about the studio at the open house. Both she and Dodd gained an interest in yoga about a year-and-a-half ago. Dodd’s original vision was a five-year plan for opening her own studio, but Werger encouraged her that the time to do it was right now.
“It was love at first practice,” Dodd said of yoga.
Dodd said Updog Yoga will offer heated or “hot” yoga classes, as well as unheated classes, and eventually the studio wants to offer kids classes and prenatal yoga classes. In the “hot” yoga classes, the studio is heated with radiant heating anywhere from 85 to 95 degrees, Werger said.
“We want customers to be at home here,” Werger said.
Werger and Dodd both agreed that anyone can practice yoga. Dodd added that her mother, who is in her late 50s, came in and did a class.
“It’s accessible for everybody,” Dodd said, adding that it’s low-impact, helps to relieve stress and helps the body detoxify.
“Our main goal is to our love of yoga,” Dodd said.
Updog Yoga is located at 1840 Mayview Road in South Fayette. Werger and Dodd said those interested in yoga can stop by to take a class or visit www.updogyoga.org.
