Shouldn’t schools treat all students the same? According to PA state law, current 10th, 11th and 12th graders do not need to pass the Keystone Exams to graduate. South Fayette is requiring those grades to take and pass the exams before they can graduate, even though it is not required. When questioned, I was informed that SF has always held its students to higher standards and expects more from them. At the Dec. 2 school board meeting, there was discussion of possibly volunteering to have the football team move up to AAA. It is not required that they move up now. The decision was made that they should follow the grid and move up only when WPIAL requires them to. Conclusion: the football team is not being challenged until required to, even though this does not fit in with the higher standards that SF expects. Students in grades 10-12 are being challenged with Keystones even though they are not required to. If the football team does not need to be challenged until required, why are the 10th, 11th and 12th graders being challenged when by law they are not required to?
