Although their PIAA team experience was short-lived, South Fayette embarks on bids to return to Giant Center in Hershey when individual wrestling tournament action commences Feb. 15 with sectional action.
The Section 1-AA tournament will be held at Chartiers-Houston. The Lions as well as the host Buccaneers compete in Section 1. The Section 3-AA tournament, in which Keystone Oaks competes, will be held at Avonworth.
Michael Carr enters the competition with an undefeated 31-0 record. The South Fayette senior competes at 132.
Other top-ranked Lions include: Jared and Zach Walker at 160 and 195 respectively.
Andrew John (106) and Grant Fetchet (152) are two additional South Fayette wrestlers expected to fare well.
Among the area’s other top Class AA grapplers are: Josh Kuslock (120), Richie McGinnis (138), Pete Provenzano (16), Derek Hull (170), from Char-Houston as well as Jake Walker (182) from Keystone Oaks.
In the PIAA Class AA team tournament, the Lions dropped their first round match to Huntingdon, 43-15. They succumbed to Saucon Valley, 47-24, in the first-round consolation bout.
While WPIAL champion, Burrell, took the team bronze medal, beating Boiling Springs, 45-20, in the consolation match, Bethlehem Catholic captured the Class AA team title with a 41-15 decision over Reynolds in the championships.
In a repeat of the WPIAL final, Franklin Regional beat Latrobe, 37-23, to claim the Class AAA team title.
Sectionals for Class AAA wrestlers will be held Feb. 22 at Gateway, Baldwin, Fox Chapel and Moon.
The WPIAL Class AA championships will be held Feb. 21-22 at Chartiers Valley while the Class AAA finals will be hosted Feb. 27-March 1 by Canon-McMillan.
The PIAA individual finals are set for March 6-8 in Hershey.
