The parent-teacher organization and Ben Franklin Elementary hosted 61 5-year-olds and their parents for a “Teddy Bear Picnic” on Aug. 14 to meet teachers, the new principal and other incoming kindergarteners. In between games of hot potato, principal Rob Garvey advised parents of a new no-food policy for birthdays and parties. “If you want to bring a treat for students, keep it out of the food realm,” he said. “This is to avoid allergy problems and to stay close to federal school lunch guidelines.” PTO president Robert McCormick said he encourages new parents to become part of the organization, which has donated iPads and other equipment to kids in the elementary school, as well as the Neil Armstrong middle school.
