Bethel Park clinches section title

Bethel Park celebrated its first section title in wrestling since 2009. The Black Hawks now will compete in the WPIAL team tournament, hosting a first-round match on Jan. 31.

Bethel Park defeated Baldwin, 42-22, to claim its first section wrestling title since 2009 when the school captured its last WPIAL team championship.

“From start to finish of the dual their was energy and excitement to get it done,” said BP mat boss Tyler Nauman. “Even with a couple starters out or moved around weights, the those who got a chance to take the mat really performed. Overall, it was a great night with good wrestling.”

Jaden Polombine, Pierce Reinhart and Colton Fisher started the match with falls at 107, 114 and 121.

BP picked up a tech fall and pin from Aden Stout and Caleb Crawford at 139 and 145 while Cordan McDonnell scored a decision at 172. AJ Tomaino and Mikey Gibson closed out the match with falls at 215 and heavyweight.

Despite losses, Seth Miller, Aiden Bench, Ian Bucheli, Maksim Miller and Hunter Goelz wrestled well.

The Black Hawks finished 5-0 in the section. They were 9-1 heading into the WPIAL Class AAA team tournament.

Despite a 38-26 loss to Canon-McMillan, Peters Township clinched a spot in the team tournament. With six wins in the match, the Indians won the tiebreaker criteria and finished runner-up to Bethel Park in the section.

Chris Cibrone, Darius McMillon, Parker Nave, Nicholas McGarrity and Colton Stocker picked up victories in the match for the Indians.

Peters Township, which finished 3-2 in the section, enters the WPIAL Class AAA team tournament with a 15-4 overall record.

The WPIAL team tournament commences Jan. 29 with preliminary action.

Bethel Park begins its championship quest Jan. 31. The Hawks host North Hills at 6 p.m. while Baldwin takes on North Allegheny. The winners in the first-round matches face-off later that evening.

Peters Township travels to Connellsville, which is hosting a tournament opener also on Jan. 31.

The Indians take on Fox Chapel while the Falcons battle Ringgold at 6 p.m. Winners meet in the quarterfinals that evening.

The semifinals and championship bouts will be held at 1:30 and 3 p.m. respectively at AHN Arena, located on the Peters Township High School campus.
