The #Garystrong Memorial Car Cruise will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Highpoint Fitness, located at 1000 Higbee Drive. Gary Carmen is shown here with his classic car.

Bethel Park and Peters Township got a jump on Fourth Of July fireworks displays as each municipality lit up the local skies on June 29.

Peters Township’s display was the culmination of Community Day. Fireworks blasted off from Rolling Hills Park at 9:30 p.m. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. there was entertainment and vendors in the park during the township’s 44th annual celebration.

Bethel Park held its annual “Summer Spectacular” at 9:40 p.m. The fireworks display was set off from Millennium Park; however, no spectators were permitted to watch from there.

For those who were unable to attend, Bethel Park’s BPTV will be broadcasting the event live on the “Municipality of Bethel Park” and “BPTV” Facebook pages as well as on BPTV’s YouTube channel, and on cable TV channels 21 (Comcast) and 32 (Verizon).

In addition to the BP fireworks display, July 6 is a big day for car enthusiasts.

The #Garystrong Memorial Car Cruise will be held Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Highpoint Fitness, located at 1000 Higbee Drive.

Gary Carmen was a 1980 Bethel Park graduate diagnosed with incurable sarcoma cancer. The rare and aggressive disease affects only 1% of adults and 20% of children.

According to car cruise organizers, including Jim Gastgeb, “Gary was a true testament of strength and resilience during his battle. He possessed a will to fight that was second to none.”

The cruise is open to classic, exotic, super cars and trucks. A $5 donation is requested per participating show vehicle.

Spectator admission is free. Additionally there will be food trucks and a DJ on site. The fitness center will also be holding an open house with access to open swim in the aquatics center.

Carmen’s wish was to organize a car cruise to raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which is dedicated to finding cures and saving lives. Last year’s event raised $13,200.
